Before the party:

We require release forms to be signed by all riders (or Parent/Guardian for minors). There are two forms, both forms must be filled out per person prior to party. Most parents usually include the forms in party invitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

The essential joy of being with horses is that it brings us in contact with the rare elements of grace, beauty, spirit, and fire.  ~Sharon Ralls Lemon

Silver Spur Riding School offers birthday parties, girl scout troop programs and other various events for riders over the age of 6 years old. These parties are a great way to celebrate your child's special day with an afternoon outdoors spent with some great horses. Parties are 3-4 hours in length and always include an hour for your group to spend at our shady picnic area. Everyone will learn how to properly ride their horse and get to play some games on horseback. We also teach the kids how to handle horses on the ground: leading, grooming and caring for horses. Larger parties (over 11 riders) will also enjoy a fun craft!

What do the children do while they ride in your parties?
The kids are paired with a suitable horse for their age/skill level, which will be handled by one of our Jr. instructors to ensure optimal safety. There are 3-6 horse/rider pairs in the arena at one time, with one instructor overseeing the activities. Riders are taught how to steer/stop/walk/trot their horses. We also play a lot of games on horseback, which is always a hit!

What will they do during the grooming session in your parties?
Kids will go with one of our instructors for a barn tour: learning about the facility, different breeds/colors of horses, interesting facts and meeting some special horses that live on our 10+ acre ranch. We will retrieve one or two horses from their stalls and teach the kids how to lead the horse on the ground, then bring the horses to our cross-tie area to be groomed. Kids learn how to brush the horses, pick their feet, proper safety techniques, etc. If there's time at the end we let everyone put some beautiful braids in their mane and tails!

Will my child ride a pony?
Probably not. While we do have some ponies that live on our ranch, we typically use full sized horses for our program. All of our horses are very safe, well trained and gentle around children.

Can I decorate the picnic area?
Unfortunately, no - we do not allow decorations, balloons, streamers or anything of the sort. Often times balloons and streamers blowing in the wind will catch the eye of a horse and startle them, so we take every safety precaution while your children are working with the horses. We encourage you to bring table cloths to put on our tables (3 rectangular picnic tables and 2 small circular tables). We have chairs and benches available for your use as well.

Do you provide food or drink?
No, we do not provide any food or drink. We have a fridge for you to use if need be, and suggest bringing a cooler for drinks. To our knowledge there is not a pizza place that delivers to our location, so please plan accordingly.

What if someone doesn't show up to the party?
We will touch base with you a few days prior to the party to confirm the number of participants and their ages. This is because we need to schedule the appropriate horses, tack and assistants in order to provide you with optimal service - this means we cannot provide a refund for "no-shows" or kids who arrive late. It is your responsibility to ensure the head count given is accurate and to confirm with each guest prior to arrival. We suggest asking parents to arrive 10-15 minutes early so paperwork can be taken care of before the start of the party.

Can parents participate if a child doesn't show up?
Unfortunately, no they cannot. We use kids-sized equipment based on the ages of children attending the party. We also use our "kid horses" for parties, some of which have weight restrictions and cannot be ridden by adults.

What do I wear?
We require all kids to wear long pants (preferably jeans or riding breeches) and sturdy, closed toed shoes, boots are preferable. Very loose fitting shirts, long jackets, or long necklaces/earrings are not ideal as they tend to bunch up while riding and may get caught in the tack. Don't forget to wear sunscreen! We will provide boots and helmets for all riders, if they don't have their own pair that is suitable. We suggest for all attendants to also wear closed toed shoes and to avoid dresses or skirts. Long pants are optional for those not riding.

What if it rains?
Luckily, living in Southern California, we rarely experience bad weather, however it does happen on occasion. If we see that the forecast will be unsuitable for the party we will either reschedule or refund your deposit. If it's a bit muddy after a storm we can usually still hold parties, but if it is actually raining we cannot ride.
