Silver Spur Riding School offers riding lessons for students ages 3 and up. All of our lessons emphasis safe and correct handling of the horse and incorporate all aspects of horsemanship - including grooming and caring for your horse before and after the ride. Both English and Western riding lessons are available and are typically taught in the arena - focusing on various riding techniques and equitation skills. For younger riders we also incorporate games and fun activities into the lesson. We teach on safe and reliable horses, all of whom are retired show horses. Our instructors come from a variety of backgrounds but all share the same passion for horses and teaching riders. They are encouraging, outgoing and fun to be around - which creates an optimal environment to learn how to ride.

First 3 One-Hour Lessons are only $150!

We understand that riding lessons are not cheap and it is a big commitment for both you and your child. This offer is the perfect way to determine if horseback riding is something your child is interested in and if our program is right for you. Valid for new students only, one time offer only. Limit of one package per person. Ages 6+ only. Not valid if you've already purchased the groupon promotion. Be sure to check with us if you are unsure if you qualify for this promotion.

Before your first Lesson:

We require release forms to be signed by all riders (or Parent/Guardian for minors). There are two forms, both forms must be filled out per person prior to lesson.

Lesson packages never expire and can be used in any timeframe. 24-hour cancellation policy is enforced. Riders must wear long pants and closed toed shoes - helmets and boots are provided for those who need them.

One-hour lessons include grooming and saddling, the average time in the saddle is approximately 30 minutes. All one-hour lessons are taught in small groups of 2-3 riders. We do not offer any private one-hour lessons, no exceptions.

Are walk-ins welcome?
Unfortunately we cannot accomodate walk-ins for riding lessons. We are a very busy riding program with high demand horses, this means that we schedule well in advance. We reccomend calling 2-3 weeks beforehand, especially if you are looking for a weekend or after school (3-6pm) timeslot.

What are your business hours?
We teach from 1pm until 6pm Tuesday to Friday. Weekends we teach 9am-4pm both Saturday and Sunday. We are closed on Mondays.

Do you teach adults too?
Yes! Although the majority of our students are kids, we love teaching adults and are happy to have you. You would be paired with other adults of similar skill level (or mature teens, depending on your age) so you don't feel like you're riding in a "kiddie" class. Please note that we do enforce a 220 lb. weight limit for the safety of our horses.

How do I schedule a lesson?
The best way to schedule a lesson is either texting (760-815-7299) or emailing Lindsay: You are welcome to call as well, but phone calls are difficult to return on a regular basis as we are outside with horses all day - this is a challenging environment for phone calls. We are also happy to schedule a time for a phone conversation, just send Lindsay a text message or email to do so.

Will I ride the same horse every week?
Yes and No. We do our best to match each rider to the most fitting horse and keep you paired for as long as possible. Every horse has different things to teach our students and as the riders progress they will need to continue riding various horses in order to learn.

Will I ride for the full hour?
One of our priorities is making sure all of our riders learn and understand every aspect of horsemanship - from the ground up! For this reason when riders are first starting out, part of the 1 hour lesson includes grooming/saddling the horse (typically 15 minutes grooming/saddling, 30 minutes riding and 15 minutes unsaddling/grooming after the ride). Mastering this can often take months or years (depending on the rider's age, size and strength). Once the student has received instructor approval and can groom/saddle safely on their own - we encourage students to arrive early and get the horse out before their lesson starts. This way the more advanced riders can have more time in the saddle.

Can I bring treats?
YES! Our horses love carrots and apples. Apples are best if they are cut into quarters, and yes, the horses can eat the core. Be careful not to feed any horses you don't know, some horses have allergies or other medical problems and can't eat treats. A couple of our horses have strict diet restrictions, so be sure to check with an instructor before feeding any horse.

What do I wear?
The best riding attire is usually long pants (preferably jeans or riding breeches) and sturdy, closed toed shoes. Very loose fitting shirts, long jackets, or long necklaces/earrings are not ideal as they tend to bunch up while riding and may get caught in the tack. Don't forget to wear sunscreen and bring a bottle of water too!

Where do I buy boots and helmets?
Mary's Tack and Feed in Del Mar has a great selection of helmets, as well as English boots. If you are looking for Western gear, check out Boot Barn. There are locations in Kearny Mesa and Oceanside. We do have a variety of helmets and kids/ladies boots for you wear, although fit cannot be garunteed.

What if it rains?
Luckily, living in Southern California, we rarely experience bad weather. But when it does happen, it usually isn't safe to ride. The barn aisleways and arenas become muddy and horses can easily slip and fall. If your lesson is cancelled, we will give you as much notice as possible, but sometimes we don't know until the same day if conditions are unsuitable. If you are unsure be sure to check with us. Of course, we will provide you with a makeup lesson and/or credit for your missed lesson.

Often times after a rain storm the riding arenas are locked and sealed so they can dry out quickly, meaning we cannot ride in the arenas while they dry. But that doesn't necessarily mean we cancel lessons on those days - as long as the terrain around the ranch is dry we will still hold lessons. Typically the focus is on ground work and trail rides with the horses.

What is your cancellation and refund policy?
We have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you know you are going to be out of town or have another commitment and will be unable to make it, just let us know as soon as possible so we can provide you with a makeup lesson or credit. Not only does your instructor have a work schedule, but the horses do too. It is important that we make arrangements for the horses to be excercised if they won't be ridden in their lessons. If your instructor will be missing a lesson, we will always let you know well in advance.

Unfortunately we do not offer refunds for our lesson packages or camps. However, the lessons never expire or can easily be transferred to someone else if you like. All camp payments are also non-refundable, but could be transferred into lessons or used for future services.

Can you reserve a timeslot for me every week?
Yes! In order to reserve a timeslot we do require the purchase of a package of lessons (see above for pricing). Unfortunately if you wish to "pay as you go" we cannot reserve a timeslot. We will have to schedule on a week-by-week basis and the lesson times may vary depending on the instructor and horse's availability.
